Agentic Commerce on Shopify: What ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode and Meta Read About Your Inventory and Delivery

ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode and Meta sell from the stock and delivery data you control. Here is what that changes for brands that also sell on Amazon.

Agentic Commerce on Shopify: What ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode and Meta Read About Your Inventory and Delivery

By Bernardo Campelo, Forbes Business Council E-Commerce Leader, Amazon SPN Certified provider, Amazon SP-API authorized partner, and Founder of PrepVia.

As of October 29, 2026, an eligible Shopify store is already open to AI shopping agents by default. Shopify's help center says its agentic storefronts let customers discover and purchase a store's products in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta, and that the feature "is active by default for eligible stores."

None of those agents counts your shelves. ChatGPT, Copilot and Meta read the price and availability Shopify shares through Shopify Catalog, which Shopify says "continuously updates your product data, so AI channels receive your latest inventory and prices." Google AI Mode and Gemini read the same kind of data from Google Merchant Center, fed by Shopify's Google & YouTube channel or by your own feed. For a brand that also sells on Amazon, the real question is where that inventory number comes from: FBA, a 3PL, your own warehouse, or all three.

The other half of the sale is the delivery promise, and Shopify moved it in the final days of October. On October 26, 2026 it built a knowledge base into the admin, where merchants publish the shipping facts agents repeat. On October 28 its Fall '26 Edition said products with a Shop Promise badge "can also rank higher" in the Catalog data shopping agents use. The badge names benefits such as Trusted delivery, which depends on how fast orders reach the carrier, and a returns benefit, which depends on your return rules.

The 60-second version

AI agents on Shopify sell from two things you control: the stock number and the delivery facts you publish. If Amazon has already sold a unit out of the same FBA pool, or your 3PL's count arrives late, an agent can still offer that unit. ChatGPT now sends buyers to your own checkout: on March 24, 2026, OpenAI said it would let merchants use their own checkout while it focuses on product discovery. Copilot, Meta and, where it has rolled out, Google AI Mode and Gemini close the sale in a checkout Shopify runs inside the AI channel. Before the holiday peak, give each SKU one owner for its Available number, hold safety stock where counts lag, publish your shipping facts and measure the time from order to the carrier's first scan.

Every date and name below was checked on October 29, 2026 against Shopify's help center, newsroom and changelog, the pages of OpenAI, Google, Microsoft and Amazon, and the UCP and ACP sites, linked where they first appear. Shopify is rolling several of these features out gradually, so open the live help page before you change a setting.

Where Shopify's Agentic Storefronts Sell, Channel by Channel

Shopify announced Agentic Storefronts on December 10, 2025. On March 24, 2026 it said "millions of merchants can sell to ChatGPT users via Agentic Storefronts" starting that week, that thousands of merchants were already selling in Microsoft Copilot, and that select brands had started selling in AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app. Meta joined the list on September 8, 2026. The channels do not close the sale the same way.

ChannelHow the purchase completesWhich stores qualify
ChatGPTDiscovery only: the buyer pays on your online store checkout, in ChatGPT's in-app browser or in a new tab on ChatGPT webStores that sell to customers in the United States; the store itself can be based elsewhere
Microsoft CopilotShopify-powered direct checkout, on by default for eligible storesStores that sell to customers in the United States; direct checkout shows only to buyers based there
Google AI Mode and GeminiShopify-powered direct checkout, still rolling out; products come from Google Merchant CenterStores that sell to customers in the United States, Canada or Australia
Meta, including Muse when availableShopify-powered direct checkout, on by default for eligible storesStores that sell to customers in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Japan or Singapore

Shopify's settings page says the "Allow Shopify to manage for me" setting keeps every channel on and "also means that you're automatically enrolled in all future agentic storefronts." You can switch ChatGPT, Copilot and Meta off one by one, but Shopify warns it can take up to 7 days before product data stops being shared through Shopify Catalog. Google AI Mode and Gemini find your products through Google Merchant Center, so there the setting only turns off direct checkout.

Agentic storefronts support only direct-to-consumer sales, and Shopify says "B2B pricing doesn't display on agentic storefronts." Inclusion in Shopify Catalog also depends on account standing, which Shopify reviews over time; its steps for building an operating history include "Fulfill orders promptly and accurately."

The order stays yours. Shopify's help pages say orders from AI channels "display in your Shopify admin with channel or referrer attribution," and its Meta page adds that you remain the merchant of record and "continue to manage fulfillment, returns, and customer service for these orders."

On cost, each channel page says the same thing today: no fees beyond your standard payment processing. Shopify's supplemental terms, last updated October 6, 2026, still let Shopify assess a fee on transactions for "certain Participating Channels" and set it out in the admin. Microsoft's Copilot Checkout FAQ also says that "today" it takes no commission, so check the admin before you budget on zero.

ChatGPT Changed Course: Discovery in the Chat, Checkout on Your Store

OpenAI launched Instant Checkout on September 29, 2025, starting with U.S. Etsy sellers and naming over a million Shopify merchants as "coming soon." Merchants paid "a small fee on completed purchases," and OpenAI's release notes show it rolling out to Shopify merchants on November 20, 2025.

On March 24, 2026, OpenAI changed course: "We've found that the initial version of Instant Checkout did not offer the level of flexibility that we aspire to provide, so we're allowing merchants to use their own checkout experiences while we focus our efforts on product discovery." The same post says Shopify product data already reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, and "No additional work is required from individual merchants."

Shopify's ChatGPT page describes the channel the same way: ChatGPT "acts as a discovery-focused referrer platform," and there is no direct checkout setting to switch on. OpenAI's developer documentation still describes Instant Checkout, and a beta of checkout plugins is being tested with approved partners, but neither is the path for a Shopify merchant today. The buyer finishes on the store you already run, so your own inventory and shipping settings decide what can be ordered.

The Stock Number Every Agent Reads

Through Shopify Catalog, the AI channels that use it receive each product's title, description, images, price and availability, according to Shopify's product discovery page. Shopify's March announcement said: "Products stay synchronized across surfaces, with real-time inventory and pricing." In April 2026, Microsoft said the Catalog feed "syndicates product data in real time" and gives Copilot "accurate pricing, inventory, and product attributes."

Real time here means Shopify's number reaches the agent quickly. It does not mean Shopify knows what your FBA account sold an hour ago or what your 3PL counted this morning, unless something writes those numbers into Shopify.

The number in question is Shopify's Available quantity. Shopify's inventory states define Available as stock you can sell that "isn't committed or set aside as Unavailable," and it leaves out incoming units. Committed covers units in unfulfilled orders, and Unavailable covers units held for damage, quality control or safety stock.

Shopify's checkout has a guardrail. Its page on fulfillable inventory says customers "can only purchase products that are in stock in locations that ship to their shipping zone," unless you turn on "Continue selling when out of stock" for a product. The guardrail only works when the Available number is right: if Shopify still shows units you no longer have, its checkout has no way to know.

Stock also feeds discovery. Shopify's listing-quality signals for agentic search include "Variant & option completeness," which measures variants, options "and their in-stock availability," although Shopify notes that AI channels often re-rank results with their own logic.

Outside Shopify, the protocols hand the same job to the merchant. Google's UCP FAQ, last updated October 16, 2026, says: "As the Merchant of Record, it is your responsibility to perform real-time inventory checks." OpenAI's feed guide, for merchants who send their own catalog, recommends full snapshots "at least daily." Shopify merchants skip that feed.

Shopify gives the same advice to brands on the Agentic plan, which is meant for merchants that don't run their store on Shopify. Its setup guide tells them to keep "pricing and inventory" current, to weigh "whether you need to prevent overselling," and to use real-time syncing through the GraphQL Admin API or webhooks when a large catalog changes often.

Amazon Plus Shopify: How One Unit Gets Promised Twice

A brand that ships its Shopify orders out of FBA does it through Amazon's Multi-Channel Fulfillment (MCF). Amazon's MCF help page says an MCF order "will be fulfilled from the same pool of inventory at Amazon fulfillment centers that is used for your FBA orders." The unit an agent offers on Shopify and the unit a buyer takes on Amazon can be the same unit.

On September 24, 2026 Amazon began rolling out multichannel selling tools in Seller Central that connect eBay, Shopify, TikTok and Walmart accounts, gradually and at no additional cost to U.S. sellers. Connected Shopify orders sync to the Manage Orders page and can go to MCF from there, with tracking flowing back automatically only when the order ships in a single parcel.

Amazon does not say the tools keep the stock count on Shopify in step with FBA. That job sits with whatever connects your Shopify store to your inventory. Amazon's own MCF and Buy with Prime app for Shopify, for example, syncs only the FBA units available for immediate fulfillment, as Available at the Amazon location in Shopify.

Three gaps turn one unit into two promises. FBA sells the last units on Amazon before Shopify's Available number drops. When a 3PL's count reaches Shopify on a fixed schedule, agents keep offering, between runs, stock the 3PL has already shipped or set aside as damaged. Or inbound units are added to Available before they are received, even though Shopify's own definition keeps incoming units out of it.

Shopify already has a tool for the first two gaps. Its developer documentation describes a safety_stock state for "on-hand units that are set aside to help guard against overselling," which merchants see as Unavailable. A buffer there on SKUs you sell in both channels, with "Continue selling when out of stock" left off unless you take backorders, helps keep a late count from becoming a broken promise. Before you rely on it, ask whoever writes each location's count whether the buffer survives its next sync: an app that sets Available directly puts the full count back, and Amazon says its MCF app syncs FBA stock "as Available inventory."

The delivery side follows the same pool. Amazon lists MCF click-to-delivery at 2 business days for Expedited and 3 for Standard on standard-size, sortable items delivered in the 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C., without opting out of Amazon Logistics. Amazon says delivery can take longer for orders with "items without sufficient inventory" and for orders placed during high-volume events such as Black Friday, and Expedited orders submitted after 2 p.m. Pacific Time get the next business day as their acceptance day.

So the promise you publish for Shopify should match the network that actually ships it. Our guide to stock shared between Amazon and Walmart covers where a shared pool should sit, and our recap of what Amazon announced at Accelerate 2026 covers MCF on your own site and the new Seller Central tools.

The Delivery Promise: Knowledge Base, Delivery Dates and Shop Promise

An agent answering "when will it arrive?" needs facts that are not product data. Since October 26, 2026, Shopify keeps them in a knowledge base at Sales channels > Agentic > Knowledge base, replacing the standalone Knowledge Base app, which "will no longer be available after January 15, 2027."

Shopify's knowledge base page says details such as your return process and shipping timelines are "the source of truth for AI agents for all non-product information about your store." Shopify drafts facts from your storefront and keeps those drafts unpublished until you publish them, but facts linked to your admin, such as your store policies and contact details, are published as soon as Shopify creates them, so review those too. The knowledge base holds up to 1,000 facts, and a rescan of your store can take up to 48 hours.

Dates come next. Shopify's automated delivery dates "use your fulfillment history to calculate when orders will arrive." They show only when the items are in stock and can be fulfilled immediately and, for U.S. orders, when the predicted date is within 5 days, so a slow handoff to the carrier shows up in the date itself.

Then the badge. Shop Promise is a free Shopify program for U.S. stores, and the updated version in the help center is marked "Coming soon" while it rolls out gradually. Its Trusted delivery benefit is decided per product category by comparing the time "from when an order is placed to when the carrier first scans the package" with a target, and badged products "can receive a ranking signal" in experiences powered by Shopify Catalog.

To qualify, a store needs an active U.S. location that fulfills orders to the United States, Shop Pay turned on, tracking on at least 90% of eligible orders and an account in good standing, and Shopify reassesses eligibility every day. Trusted delivery shows only when automated delivery dates are on, and Shopify's shipping report says carrier transit times do not affect eligibility. What counts is the time before the carrier scan.

Some options do not carry into the direct checkouts. Shopify's pages for Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta list local delivery, pickup in store and pickup points as unsupported there, along with product bundles, customizable products and subscription-only products. Shopify's "product bundles" are bundles set up with a bundles app. A kit assembled at prep and listed as its own product, with its own SKU, is not one of them, so check how each top seller is set up in Shopify before the peak.

Finally, the status has to come back. Shopify's Agentic plan guide says that if you fulfill agentic storefront orders outside of Shopify, "you need to update the order status in Shopify so that AI channels can provide your customers with accurate order updates."

UCP and ACP: The Protocols Under the Checkout

Two open protocols sit under these channels, and a Shopify merchant uses them through Shopify without building either one. Google announced the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) on January 11, 2026, saying it "was co-developed with industry leaders including Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart, and endorsed by more than 20 others," Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Stripe among them.

UCP covers catalog search, carts, checkout, identity linking and orders, and its site says businesses "remain the Merchant of Record." Its order model gives each order fulfillment expectations, defined as "buyer-facing promises about when/how items will arrive," next to a log of what actually shipped.

The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) was developed by Stripe and OpenAI and is open source under the Apache 2.0 license. Its site says businesses stay the merchant of record and keep control "over which products can be sold, how they're presented, and how orders are fulfilled." OpenAI extended ACP to product discovery in March 2026, and says that over time it will support experiences that include "local availability, and ETAs."

On by Default Is Not the Same as Ready

Because the channel turns itself on for eligible stores, switching it on early does not set a store apart. What separates stores is whether the data behind the agent holds up. In a March 16, 2026 article on operations, Bernardo listed three things that matter most for e-commerce leaders, and the third fits this channel.

"Third, you must actually use the tools you implement. Many companies adopt powerful platforms and then operate them at a fraction of their potential."

Bernardo Campelo, in a Forbes Business Council article, March 16, 2026

Where a Prep Center Fits

A prep center works upstream of the stock numbers in this post. Before an agent can sell a unit from FBA stock, that unit has to be received, counted, labeled and sent to Amazon, and the count at the dock is the first count in the chain. If it is wrong there, the quantity you declare to Amazon is wrong too, and the gap only shows up later, when Amazon's own receiving count comes back different.

PrepVia receives, inspects, counts, FNSKU-labels, poly-bags, bundles, boxes and palletizes seller inventory, then creates and ships the inbound to Amazon. Receiving and inspection are included, and discrepancies are reported within 24 hours of arrival, with photos. For Walmart WFS and TikTok Shop, PrepVia preps the inventory; those API integrations are in the researching stage.

A prep center does not run your Shopify store, set the Available number Shopify shares with AI channels, or decide which network ships an order. Those settings live in Shopify, in Seller Central and in the system that connects them. Questions worth asking any 3PL or prep partner that touches stock you sell through AI channels:

  • Count source. Which system writes each SKU's Available number in Shopify, and how often does it run?
  • Discrepancies. How fast are differences against the packing list reported, and with what evidence?
  • Holds. How are units held for damage, quality control or safety stock reported, so they stay out of Available?
  • Handoff time. For any orders it ships, what is the time from order placed to the carrier's first scan, by product category?
  • Integration depth. Is the connection native, middleware or a manual export? Our guide to what "we integrate" means lists the questions that tell them apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Shopify Agentic Storefronts?

A Shopify feature that lets shoppers find, and in some channels buy, a store's products in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta. It is on by default for eligible stores and is managed under Sales channels > Agentic in the Shopify admin.

Can shoppers buy a Shopify product inside ChatGPT?

Not in a ChatGPT checkout. Since OpenAI's change of March 24, 2026, ChatGPT is a discovery channel for Shopify merchants, and buyers pay on the store's own checkout. Copilot, Meta and, where it has rolled out, Google AI Mode and Gemini use a direct checkout that Shopify runs.

Do AI channels charge Shopify merchants a fee?

Shopify's help pages list no fees beyond standard payment processing for ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta today. Shopify's supplemental terms, last updated October 6, 2026, allow per-channel fees set out in the admin, so check it before the peak.

Where does an AI agent get my stock level?

ChatGPT, Copilot and Meta read it through Shopify Catalog, which shares price and availability and updates continuously. Google AI Mode and Gemini read it from Google Merchant Center, fed by Shopify's Google & YouTube channel with automatic product sync on, or by your own feed provider. Either way the number should start as Shopify's Available quantity, which leaves out committed, unavailable and incoming units.

If I fulfill Shopify orders with Amazon MCF, can the same unit be sold twice?

It can, if Shopify's Available number does not drop when Amazon sells. MCF ships from the same inventory pool as your FBA orders, so the Shopify count and the FBA count have to move together, with a buffer where one lags the other.

What should I publish in the Shopify knowledge base?

The non-product facts agents get asked about, such as shipping timelines and your return process. Facts Shopify drafts from your storefront stay unpublished until you publish them, and the standalone Knowledge Base app will no longer be available after January 15, 2027.

Who ships and handles returns on an order placed through an AI channel?

You do. The brand stays the merchant of record, and the order lands in the Shopify admin with channel or referrer attribution, like any other sale.

Final Take

Agentic Storefronts did not add a warehouse. They put a new kind of buyer in front of numbers you already keep in Shopify: the Available quantity, the shipping facts and the time an order takes to reach a carrier. Check each of them before the holiday peak, because the channel is already on.

For units prepped on the way to FBA, the first count happens at the prep dock. PrepVia receives, inspects and labels inventory for Amazon FBA in Miami, and reports discrepancies within 24 hours of arrival, with photos.
