Definitions

What is the difference between a kit, a bundle and a multi-pack on Amazon?

Three formats, one rule: the unit Amazon receives must carry one barcode and arrive as one piece.

Format	What it is	How it is labeled and packed
Bundle	Two or more different products sold together as one listing, under the seller's own ASIN and the seller's own barcode.	One kit barcode on the outside. Component barcodes covered. A note that the set is not to be separated.
Multi-pack	Several units of the same product sold as one listing, for example a 3-pack or a 12-pack of one SKU.	One barcode for the pack quantity, not the single unit. The single-unit barcode is covered.
Kit	An assembled set with components, inserts and packaging, built to a written procedure before it ships.	Same as a bundle: one barcode, components covered, packaging closed so the kit arrives as one unit.

Amazon treats a bundle or a multi-pack as one product with one barcode. The packaging has to keep the set together through the fulfillment center. That is why the kit is closed in a poly bag, a shrink wrap or a box. The outside carries a note such as "Sold as set, do not separate".

Component barcodes are covered so an associate scans only the kit barcode. When Amazon changes a packaging rule, the build sheet for the affected kit is updated before the next batch. When a bundle beats a multi-pack is explained in the kitting vs bundling guide for 2026.

How does PrepVia build kits at volume?

Six steps, the same for a hundred kits and for ten thousand. The count is carried from the dock to the box.

One written procedure per kit

Each kit configuration gets a build sheet: components, quantities, orientation, packaging, inserts and the barcode to apply. The floor builds from the sheet, not from memory.

Components counted at receiving

Every inbound is counted against the packing list before assembly starts. Short counts are reported with photos within 24 hours of arrival.

Assembly on a dedicated line

Kits are built in batches by configuration. A finished sample is photographed and approved before the batch runs.

Kit barcode applied and verified

The kit's own barcode is applied and read back by 2D scanner before the unit is packed. That scan is where the 99.9% accuracy figure comes from.

Poly bag or shrink wrap

Kits are poly bagged or shrink wrapped as the listing requires. A suffocation warning goes on the bag when Amazon requires one.

Boxed, with box content sent by API

Finished kits are packed by SKU and the box content goes to Amazon through our own SP-API integration. Freight is booked on Amazon partnered carriers.

What does a kit cost?

Kitting is quoted per kit configuration, based on components and packaging. Labeling, bagging and shrink wrap follow the published prices.

Turnaround

How fast are kits built and shipped?

The prep window is 24-36 hours from check-in of the complete component set. A kit cannot start before its last component is on the floor. The clock for a kit starts when the set is complete. Large configurations are scheduled as batches, and you see each batch move in the PrepVia app.

Questions sellers ask before the first kit

Do I need a new UPC for a bundle?

In general terms, yes. A bundle is listed by the seller as a product of its own, with a barcode of its own. The component barcodes stay inside the pack and are covered so a scanner reads only the bundle barcode. PrepVia applies the bundle barcode and verifies it by scan. The seller registers the listing and owns the catalog; PrepVia does not create listings.

Can you insert cards, inserts or instruction sheets into a kit?

Yes. Thank-you cards, instruction sheets, warranty cards and samples are listed on the build sheet as components. They are counted at receiving like any other component and placed in the same position in every kit. The seller is responsible for the content of the insert under the marketplace rules.

Can you build kits from components that arrive from different suppliers?

Yes. Each inbound is received and counted separately against its own packing list. Components wait in storage, billed by the day, until the last one arrives. Assembly starts when every component of the configuration is on the floor. You see each receiving report in the PrepVia app as it lands.

How do you handle expiration-dated components?

The kit carries the earliest expiration date among its components, printed on the outside of the kit. Each dated component is checked at receiving and the date is recorded on the receiving report. Components that fall outside the window the listing needs are held and reported before any kit is built.

Can we run a test batch first?

Yes. Send the components for a first batch, typically 50 to 100 kits. You receive the receiving report, photos of the finished kit, the Seller Central shipment and the invoice. Then you decide on the rest of the volume.

What happens when a component is short-counted?

The receiving count is compared with the packing list on the dock. A short count is reported with photos within 24 hours of arrival. Kits are built only up to the number of complete sets. The leftover components are held in storage until you decide whether to ship more or to build a smaller batch.

Do you unbundle or rework rejected kits?

Yes. Kits returned by Amazon or rejected at our own check are opened, and the components are inspected and counted. Good components go back to single-unit inventory or into a rebuilt kit. Rework is quoted per kit configuration, the same way as the original build.
