Amazon prices inbound placement by size tier, shipping weight and split choice. Your tier comes from the packaged dimensions, so a light but bulky box can cost far more than its weight suggests. The fee lands on your account about 45 days after receiving. The optimized split is free because you are doing Amazon's distribution work for it: more destinations, more boxes, more freight. Amazon charges per unit based on your size tier, your shipping weight and how many destinations you ship to. The size tier comes from the packaged dimensions, not just the weight. Minimal splits carry the highest per-unit fee, partial splits exist only for bulky tiers, and the Amazon-optimized split carries no placement fee. Extra-large products pay no inbound placement fee at all.
What changed in the placement fee on January 15, 2026?
Amazon split the old large bulky tier in two and created small bulky, which covers packages up to 37 by 28 by 20 inches. Small bulky carries lower placement fees than large bulky in every weight band. Standard-size bands were also cut finer: small standard went to two bands and large standard to eight. Any table still showing a single large bulky tier is out of date.
How does Amazon decide my size tier?
By the dimensions of the packaged unit plus its shipping weight. Amazon sorts your three measurements into longest, median and shortest, checks them against each tier limit, and takes the shipping weight as the greater of your unit weight and the dimensional weight, which is length times width times height divided by 139. A light but bulky box is billed on the dimensional weight.
Is the optimized split always the cheapest option?
Not always. The placement fee is zero, but you pay for more boxes, more labels and more freight legs. For small shipments the minimal fee can be cheaper than the extra freight. The break-even depends on your units, weight and carrier rates.
